The National Archives Building houses some of the most important documents in American history – the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Singleton performed a total upgrade and modernization of the complete electrical system and infrastructure, which took place while the National Historic Landmark was occupied. As such, the project had to be completed with noise control, minimal power supply outages and limited site access due to the building’s location and occupied status.
The National Archives renovation included new incoming power service, nine network transformers/protectors, a new 15kV switchgear, power distribution throughout the building, new motor control centers, an emergency generator, and systems for fire safety, security and telephone. Singleton arranged for delivery of large equipment, such as switchgear, panels and light fixtures, to bonded warehouses, with each item arriving on site as needed.
Singleton managed the upgrade and modernization with no downtime or utility disruptions. To ensure minimal impact on the building’s workers and visitors, the team completed as much work as possible prior to outages and changeovers, which took place during off hours.
The project earned Singleton a 2003 WBC Craftsmanship Award for Power Generation, Distribution and Switchgear.
